I attended my very first PRIVATE MOVIE SCREENING! I received two tickets from THE TELEGRAPH for a private screening of the movie “THE BIG SHORT” at VUE CINEMA in LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON, along with a Q&A session with the DIRECTOR of the movie – ADAM MCKAY.
THE BIG SHORT – MOVIE REVIEW
‘Credit Default Swaps’, ‘Collateralized Debt Obligations’ (CDOs), and ‘triple – A – tranches’, hats off to director Adam McKay for untangling the complexity that is the Banking and Finance world, and giving the average viewer access to the ‘exclusive club’ that is the financial services industry.
The Big Short is a sharp satirical movie about the financial crisis that hit the USA (and in turn the world) in 2008. It gives a detailed analysis of the lead up to the collapse of the US housing market and the Great Recession. But the movie is ANYTHING BUT BORING! It is DRAMATIC yet FUNNY, WITTY yet TRAGIC, and even though it is an advocacy film where the American financial system is portrayed as the villain and the average citizen a victim, Adam McKay was able to draw the viewer into the lives of the main characters who were able to foresee the impending implosion of the ‘housing bubble’, whilst at the same time made huge profits out of it.
With an all-star cast consisting of STEVE CARELL, CHRISTIAN BALE, RYAN GOSLING and BRAD PITT to name just a few, Adam McKay achieved what he set out to do which was to portray these complex characters, who are seen as outsiders in the banking world, as oddballs that the viewers would be able to identify with at a certain level.
As my specialisation is International Banking and Finance Law, I personally thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
The movie is based on a book of the same name written by MICHAEL LEWIS and is a DEFINITE MUST SEE! It has already received ACADEMY AWARDS nominations, GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS nominations, BRITISH ACADEMY FILM AWARDS nominations, and SCREEN ACTORS GUILDS AWARDS nominations, to name just a few.
Here are some of my favourite highlights from the private screening:
